Everything worth checking in the final 48 hours before a GCSE Biology paper, organised by topic area, with a realistic hour-by-hour plan and the marks students most often give away. Works for AQA, Edexcel and OCR.
1. Cells, transport and enzymes
- Eukaryotic vs prokaryotic cells and the function of every organelle you can name.
- Diffusion, osmosis and active transport: definition, direction, and whether energy is needed.
- Surface area to volume ratio and why large organisms need exchange surfaces.
- Enzyme action (lock and key, induced fit), effect of temperature and pH, and how to describe a rate graph.
- Mitosis and the cell cycle, plus stem cells and one ethical argument on each side.
2. Photosynthesis and respiration
- Word and symbol equations for photosynthesis, aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.
- Limiting factors and how to explain a plateau on a rate graph.
- Oxygen debt, lactic acid, and the difference between anaerobic respiration in muscle and in yeast.
- Uses of glucose in a plant: respiration, starch, cellulose, lipids, amino acids.
3. Organisation and disease
- Digestive enzymes: substrate, product, and site of production for amylase, protease and lipase.
- The heart, blood vessels and blood components, including one adaptation each.
- Communicable vs non-communicable disease, plus one named example of a viral, bacterial and fungal disease.
- Risk factors for non-communicable disease and how to read a correlation from data.
- Drug development stages: preclinical, clinical trials, placebo, double blind.
4. Homeostasis and response
- Reflex arc in order: stimulus, receptor, sensory neurone, relay neurone, motor neurone, effector, response.
- Blood glucose control including insulin, glucagon, and Type 1 vs Type 2 diabetes.
- Thermoregulation: vasodilation, vasoconstriction, sweating, shivering.
- The kidney: filtration, selective reabsorption, ADH and the role of the pituitary gland.
- Plant hormones: auxin, phototropism and gravitropism.
5. Inheritance, variation and evolution
- DNA, genes, chromosomes and alleles, defined precisely and in the right order of size.
- Punnett squares for monohybrid crosses, plus expressing outcomes as ratios and percentages.
- Sex determination, dominant and recessive inherited disorders.
- Natural selection in four steps: variation, competition, survival, inheritance.
- Speciation, evidence for evolution, and the difference between selective breeding, genetic engineering and cloning.
6. Ecology
- Abiotic and biotic factors with one example of each affecting a named community.
- Food chains, trophic levels, biomass transfer and why energy is lost between levels.
- The carbon and water cycles, decomposition and the effect of temperature on rate.
- Biodiversity, causes of loss, and named ways it can be maintained.
- Sampling with quadrats and transects, including how to calculate an estimate of population size.
The final 48 hours, hour by hour
Marks students give away every year
- Describing a graph when the question says explain. Describe is the trend, explain is the biology behind it.
- Writing "the enzyme dies" instead of "the enzyme denatures, so the active site changes shape and the substrate no longer fits".
- Forgetting units and significant figures in magnification and percentage-change calculations.
- Naming a variable without saying how it was controlled in a required-practical question.
- Leaving six-mark questions as a list. Use full sentences with linked reasoning.

What should I revise the night before GCSE Biology?
Stick to consolidation: the word and symbol equations, the definitions on this checklist, your weakest required practical, and three past-paper questions you previously got wrong. Do not start a new topic after 8pm.
How long does last-minute GCSE Biology revision need to be?
Two to three focused hours is the ceiling. Split it into three 40-minute blocks: definitions and equations, one weak topic, then timed exam questions with the mark scheme open.
Which GCSE Biology topics come up most often?
Cell biology, transport in cells, enzymes and digestion, photosynthesis and respiration, homeostasis (including the nervous and endocrine systems), inheritance and variation, and ecology. Required practicals appear in every paper.
Is it worth doing a full past paper the night before?
No. Half a paper, timed, is enough to rehearse pacing and command words without exhausting yourself. Mark it properly and note the command words you handled badly.
